Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
